Is your morning commute to Hartford taking longer? You are not alone, according to this traffic congestion report.

Hartford has unceremoniously made the INRIX 2022 Traffic Scorecard Report, ranking 30th amongst cities across the United States with the worst commuter congestion.

If you have noticed a slower commute over the last year, you are not wrong. INRIX estimates that peak traffic speeds have dropped from 38 mph in 2019 to 33 mph in 2022. Off peak speeds didn’t fair much better, with a drop from 43 mph in 2019 to 40 mph in 2022.

Factoring in cost of gas and other details, commuters are losing out on $507 per year in congestion costs, as well as 30 hours per year of time.

On the plus side, commuters heading home for the day traveled further in 2022 in half an hour than in 2019. INRIX’s time-lapse shows the distance a driver can travel from the city center over the last few years (excluding 2020).

What’s the worst city in the United States this year in congestion? Chicago, with a staggering 155 hours lost per driver per year. As for the entire world, London takes the crown just barely over Chicago with 156 hours lost.

INRIX uses anonymous trip data to identify the most frequented routes and destinations throughout a region, not just to and from a downtown core.
