Breast cancer bill passes unanimously

A bill that would enhance insurance coverage for genetic testing as part of breast cancer screenings unanimously passed the Pennsylvania House on Wednesday. It was passed in March by the state Senate.

Senate Bill 8 requires insurers to cover all costs associated for genetic counseling and genetic testing for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation if a person is diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer or has a family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

The bill was introduced by Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward, R-Hempfield, who learned she'd tested positive for the BRCA gene during a routine screening in late 2020.

It amends health insurance laws to remove out-of-pocket costs for genetic testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndromes, as well as supplemental breast screenings for women with a high lifetime risk of breast cancer.

The bill is set to become the first law signed by Gov. Josh Shapiro.
