Morris County girls soccer coaches recognize players, peers

EAST HANOVER — Long-time friends Gary Adair and Kevin Lynott embraced multiple times during the Morris County girls soccer coaches' luncheon on Tuesday afternoon. Neither of the coaches is particularly low key on the sideline, but they both share dedication to what they call "the beautiful game."

Lynott, the Madison coach for 17 years, received a special award from his peers. He then introduced Adair as Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

Adair led Chatham to its first girls Morris County Tournament title this fall, as well as the North 2 Group 3 final. He is believed to be the first coach to win both boys and girls MCT.

"It's his in-game coaching that puts Gary on another level," Lynott said. "He sees what's happening in the game. If he sees something that's not right, he's quick to change it around."

Mountain Lakes striker Henna Andican was named the Player of the Year. Andican, who signed a National Letter of Intent with Bucknell last month, helped the Lakers win their third straight sectional title and advance to the NJSIAA Group 1 final.

She had 35 goals and 10 assists despite missing six matches with a sprained left medial collateral ligament. Mountain Lakes picked up two of its four losses — including the MCT semi — while Andican was hurt.

Morris County's four sectional champions — Mountain Lakes (North 1 Group 1), Whippany Park (North 2 Group 1), Hanover Park (North 2 Group 2) and West Morris (North 2 Group 3) were also celebrated. The three small schools all play together in the NJAC-Liberty division.

"To be able to lead my team to the Group title is something I'll never forget," said Andican, referring back to the 2019 final. "It's crazy how much this team has achieved."

Montclair State women's soccer coach Patrick Naughter also addressed the gathering, getting cheers when he pointed out that his wife had a baby six weeks ago. Naughter, who has been at the helm for 12 years, is the most successful coach in the program's history.

He encouraged players to become coaches and officials.

"It's your time," he said. "You've done enough in the game to put yourself out there and help the next generation of players. ... Women's soccer in Morris County is as good as anywhere in New Jersey. Let's keep that going and let's be a part of it."
