Morrisson-Reeves Library offers free music, art programs

RICHMOND, Ind. — Morrisson-Reeves Library's May events include country blues and Gennett records musical performances.

Joe's Truck Stop will perform 5:30 p.m. May 12 in the library's historic courtyard.

Joe Macheret of Cincinnati, the bandleader and member of The Tillers, will perform original music inspired by a variety of styles through traveling the country.

Macheret has played on stage and recorded with artists such as JD Wilkes and the Legendary Shack Shakers, the Urban Pioneers, Buffalo Wabs and the Price Hill Hustle, Bill Kirchen, Redd Volkaert, Justin Wells, Chelsea Ford and the Trouble, Maria Carrelli and Lenny Lashley.

A week later, Evelyn Gordon will present a show based on Gennett Records and jazz greats, beginning at 6 p.m. May 19 in the library's Bard Room.

The "Edu-tainment" concert includes Gordon singing tunes that were either composed by or made famous by Black musicians from the Gennett label. Gordon also will talk about the artists and their work with Gennett Records.

Gordon performs a variety of musical styles and has recorded a solo album, "Honey So Sweet," in 2009.

Both programs are free.

The library will also present Bad Art Night at 6 p.m. May 18 in the Bard Room.

The free craft night enables adults to create art with macaroni, yarn, paper, paints, glitter and more.

Another library art project involves pickup kits for adults and teens to create an artistic tile.

The pre-packaged kits available at the main desk turns permanent marker scribbles into abstract art with a tie-dye effect.
