Morristown's historic Vail Mansion sold for $2.8 million to Madison-based company

MORRISTOWN — The historic Vail Mansion, a downtown landmark dating back more than a century, is under new ownership after it was sold for $2.8 million last month, property records show.

The massive building on South Street in Morristown, now home to luxury condos and the Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen restaurant, was sold on June 14, according to state records. The online data lists the new owner as Hospitality Resources−Hillandale LLC, an executive recruiting firm based in Madison.

The company's registered agent, John Fetterly, could not be reached for comment on the purchase Friday afternoon.

The mansion is named for Theodore Vail, the first president of AT&T. He commissioned "an Italian Renaissance palazzo" in the early 1900s to serve as his residence as well as a museum for his family's inventions, according to the condo complex's website.

The project was completed in 1918, but Vail died two years later having never moved into the home. The site then served as Morristown's Town Hall from 1923 to 1997.

The 3.4-acre property is now the site of the restaurant and 36 luxury condos known as The Residences at Vail Mansion. The condos are a mix of one- and two-bedroom units ranging in price from $973,000 to $1.25 million, according to the complex's website.

"Today, we are proud to build upon Vail’s dream, expanding his mansion to create a fairy-tale lifestyle available to a select few," reads a statement on the Residences site.

The sale was first reported on Friday by MorristownGreen.com.
