Morristown's Quinn, Delbarton's Lee decide Morris County Tournament golf title in playoff

MOUNT OLIVE — Shane Quinn has been part of four playoffs in his long golf career. Three of them have been at Flanders Valley Golf Course.

On Tuesday afternoon, Quinn finally won one. He defeated Delbarton junior Tyler Lee on the second playoff hole to capture the Morris County Tournament title.

Both players shot even-par 72 on the Blue and White courses. They also were even on the par-4 first hole, then went to No. 8.

Quinn was particularly pleased not to continue to the second hole, where he'd lost a playoff at the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference Championships as a freshman. Shane also recalled when his older brother, Evan Quinn, lost the MCT title in a playoff his freshman year.

With a gallery trailing the duo, Quinn two-putted for a 1-over 4, and Lee's six-foot second putt came up short.

"If it's that close after 18, I wouldn't expect it to be any different in a playoff," said Quinn, a Morristown senior who also shot a 72 last year to place second.

"It was sort of nice to get a bit of redemption. We normally go to (the second hole). Switching it up gave me a clean slate."

Morristown also defended its MCT team trophy, as three of the four players medaled. The Colonials totaled 301 strokes, 14 ahead of second-place Chatham, and 17 up on Delbarton.

Morristown sophomore Cormack Meldrum shot a 1-over 73 to finish third as an individual. Freshman Liam Pasternak turned in a 74 and was fifth on a match of cards.

"We came together well as a team," said Colonials sophomore Caroline Fixter, one of three girls in Tuesday's MCT – and the second-place finisher at the girls golf MCT on April 28.

"We lift each other up when it needs to be done."

Lee was unfamiliar to most of the other Morris County golfers.

Though he grew up in New Jersey and has played since age 8, Lee's family relocated to Dallas before he started middle school. They returned in May 2021, settling in Franklin Lakes and this is Lee's first season of New Jersey high school golf.

"Its definitely more competitive in Texas, which did help me bring my game over here," said Lee, who has committed to Berkeley.

"I struck the ball well. I kept the ball in play. I tried to hit a lot of greens and two-putt. I tried to play very steady."
