Mortgage goes up in flames

Nov. 18—WILLIMANTIC — Since acquiring their property on Bridge Street in 2007, members of the Willimantic Whitewater Partnership have been hard at work developing their land into a park.

Fourteen years later, their work is far from over.

But thanks to Berkshire Bank, which released the partnership's mortgage last month, the group no longer owes money on the property.

In celebration of that milestone, the group will, literally, burn their mortgage during a bonfire on Saturday.

" We're a struggling nonprofit who they have been extremely generous to," Willimantic Whitewater President Jana Roberson said, referring to Berkshire Bank.

The event, which is open to the public, begins at 4: 30 p. m. at the park, which is at 28 Bridge St. "It's open to everyone," Roberson said. " We want people to come and enjoy the property."

There will be hot chocolate and cookies for attendees to enjoy.

The event is a fundraiser, so donations will be accepted.
