Mortgage paid in full for husband, kids of fallen Charlotte police officer

The home where fallen Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Mia Goodwin lived with her husband and their three children has been paid off in full. Goodwin was killed on duty last month in a wreck involving two semi-trucks on Interstate 85.

Goodwin is survived by her husband Brenton, and their three young kids, Gabriella, Greyson and Gia.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a nonprofit created in honor of New York firefighter Stephen Siller who died during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, paid the Goodwin family’s mortgage.

“This is a family of first responders, a husband and wife dedicated to serving and protecting their community,” Frank Siller, chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, said in a news release Monday. “It is now our turn to step up and do the same for them.”

The foundation’s Fallen First Responder Home Program pays off the mortgages for the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty with young children.

Goodwin, 33, died in the early morning of Dec. 22, just after returning from maternity leave. She died in a wreck involving two semi-trucks on Interstate 85. Three other officers were injured. They all had been working an accident scene there.

A Mecklenburg County grand jury indicted truck driver Daniel Leon Morgan on a number of charges earlier this month, including involuntary manslaughter.

A two-hour funeral service took place last month at uptown Charlotte’s First Baptist Church, and several responders gathered that day to honor Goodwin, including members of the New Jersey Fire Department.

Brenton Goodwin is a Charlotte Fire Department firefighter.

“I was honored to tell Brenton that he will be able to stay in the home their family shared forever without the financial burden of a mortgage,” Siller said.

Two GoFundMe pages have raised nearly $340,000 combined for Goodwin’s family.
