Morton Grove crash leaves UPS driver with severed leg; being fitted for a prosthetic
A UPS driver was seriously injured in a car crash that severed one of his legs, according to Morton Grove police, who provided information that the crash took place near Beckwith Road and Overlook Drive on Sept. 29 in Morton Grove.
The UPS driver, John Linnemann, 55, of Mount Prospect, was standing behind his truck when a black 2016 Mercedes-Benz C300 struck him in the westbound lane of Beckwith Road. Linnemann was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, according to Morton Grove Police Commander Dennis Johnson.
Johnson said Oct. 24 the matter was being investigated and the accident reconstruction still being completed, and no charges have yet been filed for the 32-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz.
Rita Linnemann, John Linnemann’s wife, told Pioneer Press that she couldn’t say much about the incident because of the investigation but said that John Linnemann was still in the hospital and is being fitted for a prosthetic after losing his left leg.
Linnemann got a shoutout on the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce newsletter released Oct. 10. A section in the newsletter mentioned the crash and injury, wished Linnemann a speedy recovery, and identified two UPS locations for people to drop off cards and letters for Linnemann in Morton Grove.
The section read: “Healing Thoughts & Wishes! On Friday, Sept. 29, longtime UPS driver (35 years or service for UPS in Morton Grove ) was seriously injured when a car hit him while working at the back of his truck on Beckwith Road.
We wish John Linnemann our most sincere and heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery. Drop-off location for cards and letters, UPS STORE 6321 Dempster (@ Ferris) along with UPS Letterbox at 6201 Dempster.”
Karen Tomaszewski Hill, a spokesperson for UPS, said she could not go into detail about employees’ personal medical information.
“Our sympathies are with the driver and his family as he continues to recover,” said Hill.
