Mosinee hockey team, Marshfield and Stratford wrestling teams gear up for WIAA state tournament action

Three central Wisconsin high school teams will compete for Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state championships in the Madison area this weekend.

Mosinee will compete in the Division 2 boys hockey tournament at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton. This year marks the first time the event will be held at Capitol Ice Arena, which was built in 1999 and renovated in 2018.

Marshfield and Stratford will compete in the state team wrestling tournament at the UW Field House in Madison.

Here’s a look at those teams heading into their respective tournaments.

BOYS HOCKEY

About Mosinee

Mosinee (21-6), the No. 2 seed, will play No. 3 seed Oregon (16-11) at approximately 12:15 p.m. Thursday in a Division 2 semifinal. The winner will play either top seed New Richmond (22-4) or No. 4 seed Menomonie (10-16) in the championship at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Mosinee is making its fifth appearance at state as a stand-alone program. The previous trips came from 1972 to 1974 and in 1992. Mosinee also qualified as part of a co-op with Columbus Catholic and Newman Catholic in 2008.

Mosinee, which has only four seniors on its roster, edged Lakeland 2-1 in the sectional final Saturday to earn its trip to state. Mosinee has won eight games in a row and 19 of its last 20.

Mosinee leaders

Senior forward Caden Schmirler, who earned second-team all-state honors from the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association, led Mosinee with 45 goals and had 15 assists in the regular season. He added three goals in three playoff wins. … Junior defender Gavin Obremski, who was honorable-mention all-state, had 18 goals and 17 assists during the regular season. … Junior forward Grant Kuklinski added 16 goals and had 34 assists in the regular season. … Sophomore goalie Aiden Karst had an 11-5 record and 2.69 goals against average during the regular season. Senior goalie Garret Donohue also saw significant time in the net and had a 4-1 record with a 2.20 gaa.

About Marshfield

The third-seeded Tigers (16-4) will face No. 6 seed Mukwonago (25-5) in a Division 1 quarterfinal match at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The winner of that match will wrestle either No. 2 seed Bay Port (19-2) or No. 7 Reedsburg (16-3) in a semifinal later Friday night. The championship match is at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Marshfield qualified for the state team tournament for the seventh time overall and for the fifth time in the last six seasons. It has reached the semifinals four times but hasn't advanced to the final. Marshfield won the Eau Claire North Sectional after beating Holmen 46-23.

Marshfield leaders

The Tigers had eight wrestlers compete at last weekend’s Division 1 individual state tournament — Jon Sternweis (106 pounds), Brett Franklin (138), Hoyt Blaskowski (145), Caleb Dennee (152), Garrett Willuweit (160), Owen Griesbach (170), James Clements (220) and Adrian Kruger (285).

Dennee (45-6) and Willuweit (160) placed second in their weight classes. Franklin (45-10) placed fourth, while Sternweis (42-14) and Blaskowski (50-5) had fifth-place finishes.

About Stratford

The fourth-seeded Tigers (15-2) will take on No. 1 seed Fennimore (15-0) in a Division 3 semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winner will wrestle No. 2 seed Shiocton (22-2) or No. 3 Cedar Grove-Belgium (14-0) in the championship at 3 p.m.

Stratford is wrestling in the team tournament for the 10th time and for the first time since 2020. It advanced with a 42-28 win over Glenwood City at the Cadott Sectional. The Tigers have won the title twice, in 2017 and 2018, and finished second five times.

Stratford leaders

The Tigers had six wrestlers compete in the individual state tournament — Colin Cournoyer (106), Trenton Cournoyer (120), Ryan Becker (145), Kaleb Krummel (152), Carter Lueck (170) and Jackson Ormond (182).

Ormond (46-2) finished in third place, while Becker (42-15) and Lueck (43-8) had fourth-place finishes.
