The most Cape Cod gifts to buy a Cape Cod lover

Let’s start with an admission: This is a gift guide for people who love Cape Cod.

We’re talking the sort of person who visits every single summer, who is constantly telling people that a Cape Cod beach is their happy place, who maybe loved the Cape enough to move there.

This gift guide isn’t just passively Cape Cod, this guide is aggressively Cape Cod. Everything that a true Cape Cod lover should have plus the things that visibly celebrate that you love Cape Cod.

Without further ado, here’s the list:

A Cuffy's of Cape Cod sweatshirt

The Cuffy’s sweatshirt is a classic — the ultimate statement that you vacationed on Cape Cod. Why? For one thing, they don’t sell them online. You have to actually step foot on the Cape to get one. Two, they are the perfect attire for a bonfire on sandy beaches. And three, they last forever (Writer’s note: I’ve had mine for almost 20 years.)

Prices vary based on in-store sale offers, and the inventory is always changing. They have two locations — the flagship in West Dennis, which features a boardwalk, and a second store in the heart of Provincetown.

The Cape Cod screwball bracelet

It’s become so popular there are many knock-offs now, but the true Cape Cod screwball bracelets can only be bought from Eden Hand Arts. That’s the real deal. The bracelets are marked with a tag or have the name of the small artisan studio.

As an alternative, if you already have a screwball bracelet that you treasure, consider the Cape Cod fish bracelet. This silver, cuff-style bracelet pays homage to the peninsula's origins (not to point out the obvious, but Cape Cod is named after a fish) while looking very coastal chic on your wrist.

Shopping here is not like shopping at other stores. Due to the popularity, you need to secure a free ticket online to reserve a spot for one car and up to three people. The store is closed for the season, but we still think this is a good gift idea. Give an IOU that promises an experience this summer.

A piece of classic Scargo Pottery

A haven for artists, the Cape has many, many wonderful pottery studios. If you want to carry the Cape Cod vibe into your everyday life, you need a piece of Cape pottery that you will use every day — something like a good mug.

Scargo Pottery, founded in 1952, is the longest-functioning pottery studio on Cape Cod. It makes all kinds of pieces, from practical to fine art sculptures. To see what it has, visit its website or store at 54 Studio Way in Dennis.

A compass rose necklace from Cape Cod Jewelers

If you're fortunate, your Cape experience includes some time on a boat — fishing, looking for whales or just being on a boat. And while boats are great and would certainly make an exciting gift, they are too big for this gift guide so we're proposing something symbolic ― a compass rose necklace.

Used on nautical maps, this is one of the beautiful ways to represent the cardinal directions. Put into jewelry form — with gold and sterling silver — it's stunning. You can get one at Cape Cod Jewelers for $145 or by visiting the storefront at 366 Main St., Hyannis.

A taste of the sea with 1830 Sea Salt

A literal taste of the Cape, this is a great gift for someone who feels connected to the sea. Made from water that is collected from the shores of Chatham and then evaporated, this is true Cape Cod sea salt, honoring a Cape tradition that dates back to the blockades of the Revolutionary War.

Also, you can feel good about the story behind the brand, 1830 Sea Salt, 108 Meetinghouse Road in Chatham, is one of the businesses of Cape Abilities, a nonprofit that employs and supports people with disabilities.

In addition to classic sea salt, they offer several spiced blends. Tins are $10.

Authentic Wampum jewelry

First off, might we suggest not getting your Wampum jewelry from tourist shops? You’ll find it there, but if you want to really appreciate the Cape and the cultural heritage of the piece, buy it from a Native artisan.

At the Wampanoag Trading Post, shell lovers can find their pick of jewelry. Carved from Quahog shells, these pieces will allow you to bring a little bit of the seashore with you wherever you go. Prices range from $70 to more than $1,000.

Saltwater taffy made on Cape Cod

An iconic part of the Cape summer palate, saltwater taffy brings back the moments of summer. The funny thing about the name is there is actually nothing salty about it. Saltwater taffy is the same as regular taffy, it’s just marketed differently in coastal towns.

But that’s not what you’ll be thinking about when you challenge the person next to you to a saltwater taffy pull. You’ll be thinking about your youth and beach towns. If you’re looking for some made-on-Cape-Cod saltwater taffy, try the Kandy Korner in Dennis. They sell a pound for $11.95, and they ship.

Cape Cod soy candles that smell like the beach

We don’t have a perfect way to bottle up the scent of the ocean, but we can point you in the direction of a candle that will make you nostalgic.

Cape Cod Soy Candles offers scents such as Pleasant Bay, Cape Cod Cranberry, Front Porch Lilac, Beach Cottage Candle and Sandy Neck Bonfire, which are sure to invoke your favorite Cape memories. Prices range from $5 to $32.

Maggie Dwyer, owner of Cape Cod Soy Candle, has made candles from her Marstons Mills home for several years and sells them online and in local shops, including Whole Foods in Hyannis.
