Here Are 2019’s Most Googled Halloween Costumes

Look, pretty much everything is crowdsourced these days, so why not your Halloween costume? For the truly uninspired, seeking out this year’s most googled Halloween costumes can do the trick when you need a quick fix. (Alternatively, if your goal is to stand out, you can find out which ideas to steer clear from.) If you suffer from coulrophobia—a.k.a. fear of clowns—you might want to stay in this Halloween, since the #1 most searched costume was "It"'s Pennywise, and "Clown" came in at #6. Holding in second place is "witch," a perennial classic with staying power that could be dressed up—think Stevie Nicks, wrapped in layers of ethereal shawls and scarves—or down, if you want to grab a pointy hat from CVS and call it a day.

Below are the top 10 most googled costumes for the year overall, then the top searches by state, courtesy of Google's Fright Geist data tool. Thankfully, no offensive costume is trending—yet. And remember that Vogue has you covered with couples costumes, singles costumes, celebrity costumes, and pop culture-inspired costumes...there’s no excuse to just throw on a sheet and call yourself a ghost on Halloween night.

The top 10 most googled costumes in the U.S.:

Excitement about the Spider-Man movie franchise might be responsible for getting this one into the top 10. If the full suit isn't up your alley, you can always channel Zendaya at the Spider-Man: Far from Home premiere.

4. Dinosaur

With a Jurassic Park reunion on the horizon, it makes sense that "dinosaur" is, once again, one of the most-googled Halloween costumes. With Daniel Kaluuya set to produce a live-action Barney movie, this costume has never been more relevant.

5. Descendants

This film franchise about the teenage children of Disney villains makes for a great group costume. If you're looking to make it a family affair, rope in your parents to serve as the original villains!

6. Clown

If Pennywise from It is a little too specific for you, why not go with the all-purpose clown costume? It's simple, effective, and doesn't require much more than a wig and some face paint.

7. Fortnite

This video game-inspired costume topped last year's charts, but it's fallen to #7 this year. Still on the top 10 list, though! Not bad for a game that's only been around for two years.

8. Chucky

This costume likely snuck its way onto the list courtesy of the reboot, Child's Play, which hit theaters last summer. With a few fashionable updates, the "haunted doll" look could work in everyday life—just throw on a Batsheva dress.

9. 1980s

From Stranger Things to G.L.O.W., there's no shortage of 1980s-era inspiration on TV to help you put together this year's costume. When in doubt, go neon, and toss in a pair of fishnet stockings for good measure.

10. Unicorn

This costume often makes the most-googled list, perhaps because of how easy it is to assemble; just slap a horn on your head, and you're good to go. Ready, set, sparkle.
