It wasn’t just a pink summer at the box office.

The blockbuster movie “Barbie” is carrying its popularity right into Halloween.

Google’s Frightgeist ranks Barbie as the No. 1 costume choice in the United States as well as in Florida. Google launches the Frightgeist microsite annually as a collaboration with Google Trends and the Google News Initiative to curate the top 500 costume searches for the year.

Heading into weekend Halloween parties and next week’s trick-or-treat holiday, Barbie was the leading costume search term nationally, according to Frightgeist.

Ryan Gosling as Ken and Margot Robbie as Barbie in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Barbie” leave Barbieland to find the real world. A famous scientist has told his millions of followers he’s figured out the location of Barbieland.

And that ranking extends to the Sunshine State under the following local markets:

  • Tampa-St. Petersburg

  • Miami-Fort Lauderdale

  • Fort Myers-Naples

  • West Palm Beach-Fort Pierce

  • Daytona Beach-Melbourne

  • Jacksonville

  • Gainesville

Panama City was the lone Florida market on Frightgeist’s costume map to not list Barbie as the top search. Panama City’s top search was a princess costume.

The princess costume ranked second behind Barbie nationally and locally, Frightgeist’s data said.

Director Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was a box office smash. The film racked up more than $1.4 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.

Another popular fictional character from the past year cracked the top five for local Frightgeist searches. That character is Wednesday Addams. The hit Netflix show, “Wednesday,” starring Jenna Ortega, was released Nov. 23, 2022, and became one of the most-watched Netflix series in history.

Wednesday Addams came in at fourth on costume searches locally, while a pirate and Spider-man also were in the top five.
