The most popular rom-com movie in California, according to Looper

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FOX5/KUSI) — Love is in the air as Valentine’s Day approaches, making it the perfect time to enjoy one of many popular romantic comedies.

Also known as rom-coms, these types of movies are oftentimes light and comic with plots that generally focus on the development of a romantic relationship.

Which of these kinds of films are considered among the best? Looper recently decided to investigate to find out which rom-com movies charmed audiences the most, releasing their findings by state.

Three San Diego restaurants receive star awards in Forbes Travel Guide 2024

While conducting their analysis, researchers at Looper used IMDS — an online database of information related to films, television series, online streaming content, etc. — to compile a list of the top 100 rom-com movies of all time.

From there, the researchers used a SEO tool called Ahrefs to find the global Google search volume for each movie and cross-referenced the findings with IMDb votes, IMDb scores, and domestic box office lifetime gross to identify 2024’s top 15 best rom-com films to watch.

To narrow down the results per state, Looper looked at the search trends data — using Google Trends — for each movie in the top 15 between February and September 2024. Data from October to January was excluded to prevent results from being skewed due to the popularity of certain films during or around the Christmas season.

According to this study, the most popular rom-com in the country is “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Julianne Moore. The movie is about how a middle-aged husband’s life changes dramatically when his wife asks him for a divorce.

The second most popular rom-com in the U.S., according to Looper, is “Love Actually” starring Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon and Liam Neeson. This film follows the lives of eight different couples in dealing with their love lives in the setting in London, England.

In the third spot was “10 Things I Hate About You,” starring Heath Ledger Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. If you’ve seen this movie then you know it’s about a high-school boy named Cameron who cannot date a girl named Bianca until her anti-social older sister has a boyfriend. Ultimately, Cameron pretends to be someone else to charm Kat.

As for the state of California, the most popular rom-com was “The Proposal,” starring Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds and Mary Steenburgen. In this plot a pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her visa status in the U.S.
