Navy blue has been revealed as the most relaxing colour in the world by papermakers G.F. Smith.

Over 26,000 participants were involved in the study, which was conducted in association with the University of Sussex, to discover which hue was the most tranquil. Those who took part in the research were quizzed on their emotional response to specific colours and felt more calm when looking at a dark blue hue.

The study also found that participants had an even lower heart rate when surrounded by a shade of blue. While it doesn't reveal the exact shade of blue (e.g. a Pantone colour match) to evoke the feeling of relaxation, a darker navy blue is said to be more relaxing than other tones.

"Colour has always had an intrinsic relationship with our culture and is woven into our consciousness," John Haslam, G.F Smith’s joint managing director told Creative Bloq.

"The story of colour maps a particular history through our cultural development – telling a much larger story about the way we perceive, value and cherish colour. The study underlined that colour is as much about substance as it is about beauty.

"The fascinating results and their relevance are shared in the report – inspiring the world to think differently about the role and value of colour in our lives."
