Motel fire under investigation

The Michigan State Police Fire Marshall Division has been called in to help determine the cause of a commercial fire that broke out Wednesday at the America’s Best Value Inn motel in Jonesville.

“We have not determined a cause for the fire as of yet,” Jonesville Department of Public Safety Director Kurt Etter stated in an email to The Hillsdale Daily News on Thursday.

The Jonesville Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke filling one of the rooms around 6:30 p.m. and arrived to find smoke billowing from the building.

Mutual aid was dispatched to the incident from Litchfield and Hillsdale and the departments worked together to extinguish the flame before it spread further.

U.S. 12 was closed down in both directions for nearly two hours while firefighters worked to contain the fire which was brought under control quickly.

Etter said thno injuries were reported in the incident and that eight people were moved to different rooms in the motel as much of the building where the fire broke out suffered either fire, smoke or water damage or a combination of the three and many of the rooms were left without running water or electricity after the incident.

Jonesville firefighters work on overhaul operations once the fire was extinguished.
