Mother accused of abusing runaway child arrested in Decatur

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Decatur Police Department (DPD) says that a mother was arrested after her runaway child was found hiding on another property.

DPD said that they were dispatched to the area of Mill Road SW about a report of a child who ran away from home on Sunday. According to officers, after four hours of searching, the child was found hiding in a structure on another property in the area.

Police locate runaway 9-year-old in Decatur

Officers on the scene determined that the child needed a medical evaluation. The child was transported from the scene by ambulance to Decatur-Morgan Hospital to be medically evaluated. After evaluation, injuries on the child’s body were found to be consistent with physical abuse.

Upon further investigation, officers identified the child’s mother, Jessica Cowley, as a suspect. DPD says that Cowley was arrested for the willful abuse of a child. Cowley was transported to the Morgan County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
