Mother and son charged in Grovetown shooting at Circle K

A mother and her juvenile son recently were charged following a shooting Friday in Grovetown. Authorities say the mother drove a car as her son fired a handgun out the window.

The son, 15, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. His mother, Arleta Bryant-Allen, was charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Grovetown Police Chief Jamey Kitchens noted in a news release that the shooting stemmed from an argument that started inside the Circle K at Horizon South Parkway and Wrightsboro Road. The altercation continued outside, which led to the victim retrieving a handgun from his wife when she arrived at the scene. Police said that's when others involved in the argument retreated to a vehicle in the parking lot driven by Allen.

Police said Bryant-Allen exited the parking lot onto Horizon South at which time her son fired six rounds from a .380 handgun out of the rear window toward the victim and his wife. Kitchens noted no injuries.

After reviewing surveillance footage, police recognized Bryant-Allen's vehicle. It had previously been stopped and cited in Grovetown for a traffic offense.

Investigators made contact with Bryant-Allen, who turned herself in along with her son hours later. She also surrendered the firearm used in the shooting. She was transported to the Columbia County Detention Center while her son was taken to the Regional Youth Detention Center.
