FREMONT, Ind. — The Indiana State Police and Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating a fatal structure fire that claimed the lives of a mother and her three children early Saturday morning.

The Fremont Fire Department was dispatched around 5 a.m. to 400 E. Toledo St. in Fremont, Indiana and arrived to find a working fire, according to authorities.

Mutual aid quickly arrived from Angola, Orland and the Ashley-Hudson Fire Departments.

Firefighters discovered the three children and their mother inside the structure and they were reportedly located in the same room.

All four victims were transported to Cameron Hospital in Angola, Indiana where the children were all pronounced deceased.

The female — whose identity is being withheld pending next of kin notifications — was flown to Lutheran Hospital’s burn unit in Fort Wayne, Indiana by Parkview Samaritan air ambulance where she succumbed to her injuries.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the fire and a preliminary investigation showed the fire started on the second floor of the home in an area unoccupied at the time.

Autopsies for all four victims will take place Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana to confirm the cause and manner of death.
