The Mother of a Transgender Teen Surprised Her in the Best Way

When Erica Maison taped her daughter Corey while asking her to look for a box hidden behind a pillow, the 14-year-old was predictably ambivalent. Like all teens. But what was waiting behind the box was something most teens never receive: it was the first dose of estrogen necessary to help Corey transition.

The video has over a million views now, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Sometimes, the Internet really isn't trash. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Erica said that Corey’s reaction was all real. “I could tell she really had no idea what was happening,” she said. “I was very anxious and couldn’t stop smiling.”

Corey first came out as a transgender two years ago after seeing a video of the popular Jazz Jennings, another 14-year-old transgender teen. Clearly, visibility matters. Erica is hopeful that when other kids see the video of Corey, they'll be inspired to accept themselves as they are. “I think one of the biggest issues with our society today is that people just don’t understand what being transgender actually means,” she told​ Buzzfeed. “I want people to watch this video, and see the raw emotion of a transgender child that can finally live her life the way she feels inside. I want people to see this, because maybe it will open their eyes.”
