‘Mother of all upgrades:’ From iPhone 3G (iOS 4) to iPhone 6 (iOS 8)
Tim Cook was apparently not kidding when he told The Wall Street Journal that the iPhone 6 models will trigger the “mother of all upgrades,” as one MacRumors forum poster just revealed. Forum member Kalsta upgraded from the iPhone 3G all the way up to iPhone 6, in what can only be described as a massive upgrade for an iPhone owner using ancient software and hardware, at least by today’s smartphone standards.

For those people not familiar with Apple’s iPhone history, the iPhone 3G is the second-generation iPhone, a device packing a 3.5-inch display that was launched in July 2008. The phone was discontinued two years later, with the latest iOS update for it arriving later that year: iOS 4.2.1.
Meanwhile, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is part of Apple’s eighth iPhone generation, and runs the recently released iOS 8 out of the box.
“Like lots of people, I don’t like the antenna lines or the protruding camera” Kalsta wrote. “However… first impression of the phone (looking at the front) was a definite ‘wow’ from me. It’s hard to ignore the appeal of a shiny new iPhone, and the rounded glass edges really do look great. I’m very happy with the size of the 6. And yes, it does feel 50 times faster than my old 3G!”
“My only real complaint so far is the position of the lock button,” he added. “I can see why Apple put it there with the larger phones, but I find it’s now awkward to adjust the volume, because my thumb often happens to be right over the lock button, and as Newton taught us all, for every button press there is an equal and opposite button press on the other side of the phone. I suspect over time I’ll adjust the way I do this without even thinking (I’m already finding it a bit easier), but yeah… not ideal placement [in my opinion].”
