The mother of a Welsh paramedic who died last year at age 23 said a Facebook post claiming her daughter had littered "pushed her over the edge," according to the Welsh outlet The National, which cited comments made after an inquest hearing.

Charlotte Cope originally died at her home in Rhondda, Wales, in April 2020, according to The Guardian. Rachel Knight, an assistant coroner for South Wales Central Area, marked the death as a suicide, the BBC reported.

The day before she died, someone posted photos on Facebook depicting Cope in her work uniform standing next to trash on the ground and claiming she littered, the BBC reported, citing comments made at the inquest hearing. Cope's mother, Heidi, reportedly said the littering post was shared hundreds of times, with people writing "vile" messages about her daughter.

"That day she woke up to find the post had been shared hundreds of times and the messages being written about her were vile and she was too embarrassed," Heidi Cope reportedly said after the inquest hearing, according to the BBC.

Heidi said after the inquest hearing that she thought her daughter "would be here today if it wasn't for that post," according to the National.

Facebook did not respond to a request for comment.

The hearing occurred at the Pontypridd Coroner's Court, according to Coroner for South Wales Central Area records.

Heidi said her daughter had been struggling with anxiety and an eating disorder, according to the National, citing comments made after the hearing.

A Facebook account that appeared to belong to Cope's mother did not respond to a request for comment.

Charlotte's most recent post on her Facebook page, which has since been made into a "memorialized account," is a selfie from March 2020. Her page's bio states that she studied at the University of Plymouth and worked as a paramedic at the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust.

The South Wales Central Coroner's Office did not respond to a request for comment.
