Motherland creator Sharon Horgan has opened up about starring in a hard-hitting new series that could divide viewers.

Horgan acts alongside Good Omens' Michael Sheen in the new BBC One drama Best Interests.

The pair play on-screen husband Andrew (Sheen) and wife Nicci (Horgan) as they struggle to come to terms with their daughter Marnie's (Niamh Moriarty) life-threatening condition.

Appearing on BBC's The One Show, the Bad Sisters creator and actor praised the talent of the cast and said the show will cause audience members to flit between the choices made by her character and Sheen's.

Horgan said: "It's a family of four, and their youngest girl, Marnie, has a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy; and where we join the family, her condition has worsened, so her consultants and doctors think it's time to sort of stop treatment.

"They feel like it's not helping her, it's too invasive, it's painful, and the family think she still has a quality of life and she can still laugh and love, and what's amazing about the drama and Jack Thorne's writing is that he tells it through the parents."

However, their decision starts to take a toll on the family, including their other daughter Katie (Alison Oliver) and cracks begin to show.

She added: "The father starts to feel uncomfortable with the choice and is worried about how much pain she is in – the mum isn't going to give up on her."

The show tells the story through different perspectives, focusing on different family members at times as well as the doctor.

"Everyone in it is amazing", Horgan said of the cast, and commented: "There's a Kramer vs. Kramer aspect to it. They have to end up in the High Court deciding what's in the best interest of their daughter, who both of them equally adore and love."

Show host Alex Jones ended: "A hard watch, but worth the watch definitely."

Best Interests starts June 12 at 9 pm on BBC One

Good Omens season 1 is streaming now on Prime Video, where season 2 will premiere on July 28.
