Mother's Day, Lilac Festival and other food news

Hello friends,

If you're a Star Wars fan, May the Fourth be with you!

Thursday is Cinco de Mayo, and Mexican restaurants will be packed. Know that the celebration marks the day in 1862 when 2,000 Mexican soldiers faced 6,000 French troops at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War — and won. So if you're enjoying a margarita tomorrow, perhaps raise a glass to the people of Mexico and the spirit of fighting against the odds.

This weekend kicks off the first of three weekends of the Rochester Lilac Festival, which is bringing back free concerts in Highland Park, and of course there will be lots of fun festival food. On May 21, it will host the Rochester Lilac Festival Craft Beer Expo, which will feature more than 40 craft breweries, cideries and distilleries.

Highland Park in Rochester is steady with visitors taking in the flowering magnolia and cherry trees on Saturday, April 30, 2022. The lilac bushes are starting to bloom in time for the Rochester Lilac Festival which starts May 6.

And finally, Sunday is Mother's Day, and if you want to want to take Mom out for a nice meal, you'd better make reservations. I put together a list of 14 ideas for the big day — one is the Lilac Festival — and it's available to subscribers only.

Here are a couple of possibilities that came to my attention after the story published:

Braddock Bay Tavern and Grill, 372 Manitou Grill in Hilton, will serve a four-course Mother's Day dinner for $54.99 per person. Find details on its Facebook page. A reader recently emailed and raved about the brunch he had there.

Charcoal Corral, 7037 Chapman Ave. in Perry, will serve a breakfast buffet from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost $18.50 for adults, $16.95 for seniors and $9.95 for children under 10. Moms also can play a free round of mini golf. Reservations are not accepted for this buffet. Find more information on its Facebook page.

• If your mom enjoys helados — colorful ices sold in Puerto Rico — Ice Dreams is offering a Mother's Day box with 10 sample scoops of its own flavors, plus a four-pack of Mamita's Ices for $15. Order by May 7. Find details on its Facebook page.
