On Friday night, Salas was assisting a Border Patrol agent involved in a single-vehicle crash while transporting six undocumented migrants in Maverick County, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

Salas was taken by ambulance to Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center in Eagle Pass and then airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio, where he died late Saturday morning with his family at his side, DPS said.

Salas was a special agent in the DPS Criminal Investigations Division stationed in El Paso and a member of the DPS West Texas Special Response Team.
