One man is dead and a woman and child are hospitalized after a motorcycle collided with an SUV on Friday and burst into flames, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived at the crash near Sweetwater Road and 35th Avenue and extinguished the fire before treating a woman and an 11-year-old boy, according to Capt. Scott Douglas, a spokesperson for the Fire Department.

According to Phoenix police, the woman had been a passenger on the back of the motorcycle. The man driving the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The SUV was operated by an adult male who stayed on scene and is cooperating with police; alcohol is not suspected at this time,” said Sgt. Brian Bower, a spokesperson for Phoenix Police Department.

The boy, who was a passenger in the SUV, was taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to Bower.

As of 7:15 p.m. Friday, the site of the collision remained an active scene with road closures affecting northbound and southbound traffic along 35th Avenue from Sweetwater Road to Willow Avenue.
