Motorcycle hits SUV backing out of driveway, killing rider in Windham, Highway Patrol says

A motorcyclist died after colliding with an SUV in Windham shortly after 9 p.m. Friday.

The Ohio Highway Patrol said a 32-year-old Garrettsville woman was backing a 2022 Toyota Highlander out of a driveway on state Route 82 in Windham, and a 2017 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle operated by Joshua Cottrill of Windham collided with the Toyota. Cottrill was thrown from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene. Cottrill was wearing a helmet, troopers stated in a press release.

Another adult was a passenger in the Toyota, as were three juveniles; no one in that vehicle was injured.

The crash remains under investigation, the patrol said. The Windham and Garrettsville fire departments, Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Portage County Prosecutor’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation and F&S Towing also responded.

The patrol said troopers had been responding to another, minor crash that took place at about 9 p.m. at a different part of state Route 82 when the fatal motorcycle crash occurred. Nobody was injured in the minor crash.
