Brooklyn mom fatally struck riding scooter with 6-year-old son on the back by car pulling out of driveway: ‘She was the life of this block’

A mother riding a scooter with her little boy sitting on the back was fatally struck by a car pulling out of a driveway in Brooklyn on Wednesday, police and family of the woman said.

The mom, identified by her boyfriend as Winter King, 32, was cruising down Dean St. near Albany Ave. in Crown Heights with her 6-year-old son, Major, when the car pulled out of the residential driveway about 6:25 p.m., police said.

King was thrown off the bike and into a parked car across the street, sources said. She was rushed to Interfaith Medical Center, but she could not be saved.

Neither the mom or little boy were wearing helmets.

“I was at the hospital with her when she passed,” said Duke, the woman’s boyfriend. “She just flat-lined.”

Her young son Major walked away from the crash with cuts and scrapes, Duke said.

He was listed in stable condition at the same hospital at which his mother died in, police said.

“It was a freak accident,” said Duke, who declined to give his last name. “She knew how to ride a scooter. She was an experienced rider.”

The grieving boyfriend said King and her son weren’t wearing helmets. He said they were riding just around the block from their home when the stunning accident unfolded.

“She was the life of this block,” said Michelle Wardlaw, King’s best friend. “She was always riding that scooter. She always rode with her kids. She rode with the dog, she rode with her son, she rode with her daughter.”

King, who friends described as a “bike enthusiast,” worked as a security guard and had another daughter.

The driver of the car remained on the scene and was not immediately facing charges.

“She was a good mother,” Duke said. “That was my baby.”
