Motorcyclist dies in crash on I-75 in LaSalle Township

LaSALLE TWP. – A motorcyclist died early Wednesday in a crash on I-75 after colliding with one vehicle and being struck by another.

The preliminary investigation showed James G. Delikta, 46, of Mount Clemens was operating a Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle just before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday on northbound I-75 within a construction zone north of South Otter Creek Road in LaSalle Township when he rear-ended a Ford Escape driven by William W. Null, 64, of Toledo, a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said. After impact, Delikta fell from his motorcycle, coming to rest in the left lane of travel where he was then struck by a Ford Focus operated by Joseph M. Kennedy, 52, of Toledo. The motorcycle came to rest in the middle of both northbound lanes. Kennedy and Null brought their vehicles to a stop on the freeway's shoulder.

Delikta was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash, the release said. Null and Kennedy were not injured. When both collisions occurred, Null and Kennedy were wearing their safety belts. Delikta was wearing a helmet.

Speed is a contributing factor, the release said.

Members of the LaSalle Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by Sgt. Brian Quinn and Deputy Sheriffs Alec Preadmore, Nicholas Burkhart, Jon Cregar, and Steven Warren of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division.
