Motorcyclist killed in crash near downtown Fort Collins

A motorcyclist is dead following a crash Monday afternoon near downtown Fort Collins.

Fort Collins police said they were notified of the crash about 2 p.m., involving a Yamaha motorcycle and a GMC Sierra pickup at the intersection of East Mulberry Street and Peterson Street.

The preliminary investigation revealed the motorcycle was travelling eastbound on Mulberry Street and the pickup northbound on Peterson Street. The driver of the pickup stopped for the stop sign before proceeding into the intersection, where the collision occurred.

The motorcycle rider who was involved in the collision was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Police are investigating if the speed of the motorcycle was a factor in the collision.

Investigators said there was another motorcyclist who was riding nearby at the time of the collision with whom they wish to speak. Anyone with information regarding this collision who has not already spoken to police are asked to call Detective Drew Jurkofsky at 970-221-6869.

Due to the severity of the collision, the Fort Collins Police Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling Team responded to take over the investigation.

"We ask all motorcycle riders to take advantage of protective equipment available and follow all posted speed limits,'' said Sgt. Mike Avrech, who oversees the CRASH Team.

The Larimer County coroner will release the name of the decedent after next of kin has been notified.
