Motorcyclist killed in Route 422 accident in western Berks [Update]

Oct. 28—A 21-year-old Marion Township man was killed Thursday night when his motorcycle collided with an SUV on Route 422 in Heidelberg Township, officials said.

The motorcyclist was eastbound on Route 422, which is also Penn Avenue, at 5:32 p.m. when the cycle collided with the SUV that was turning left from the left-turn lane on Penn Avenue onto Hill Road, said South Heidelberg Township police, who provide police service to Heidelberg Township.

Police said the motorcyclist, whose name was not released, was thrown from his cycle and found dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, police said.

The SUV driver, a 53-year-old woman from Heidelberg Township, was not injured.

The Berks County coroner's office was called to the scene.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 422 were closed between East High Street in Womelsdorf and Tulpehocken Forge Road at the Heidelberg Township-Robesonia line for about 3 1/2 hours.
