Motorist alerts trucker to sparks flying from trailer, VT cops say. It was a close call

A motorist following behind a natural gas tanker trunk on a highway sprang into action after seeing sparks fly from the beneath the truck’s trailer, according to Vermont State Police.

What happened next was a close call.

The motorist noticed the sparks around 11 p.m. on June 1 while driving southbound on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh, according to a news release from the Vermont State Police.

The motorist drove around to the front of the tanker and alerted the truck driver, the release says.

The truck driver stopped and got out and away from the tanker before it caught fire and exploded, according to police. No one was injured.

Photos from the scene show a massive fire engulfing the truck and spreading across the two-lane highway, according to WCAX. Video from the outlet shows the truck charred and completely destroyed.

Multiple fire departments responded to the scene. The Ferrisburgh Volunteer Fire Department did not respond to a request for information from McClatchy News.

Part of Route 7, the north-south highway that extends from southern Connecticut to northern Vermont, was closed while emergency responders worked to extinguish the blaze and clean up the scene, according to the release. The local electric company also responded to help restore power to the area.

Ferrisburgh is about 20 miles south of Burlington.
