Mount Laurel man killed in April motorcycle chase with South Jersey police

PEMBERTON BOROUGH - Authorities have identified a Mount Laurel man as the motorcyclist who died during a police pursuit here.

John R. Nutt, 41, was killed on April 20 when his motorcycle collided with a minivan on County Route 687, also known as Elizabeth Street, in Pemberton Borough.

A passenger on Nutt's motorcycle was hospitalized with critical injuries, but has since been released, the Attorney General's Office said in a statement Tuesday.

It said the incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. after Pemberton Township Officer Laquan Jett responded to a 911 call from a woman alleging she'd been struck by Nutt.

The woman told a dispatcher that Nutt and a woman had left her home on a motorcycle.

How did the deadly crash in Pemberton Borough happen?

A dashboard camera shows Jett's patrol car speeding through traffic for a little more than a minute, with most vehicles pulling over to the right to make way for the officer.

When Jett finally approached Nutt from behind, the motorcycle sped away for about 30 seconds, at one point riding on the double yellow line on the center of the highway.

The video indicates the crash occurred near Davis Street when Nutt tried to pass the minivan on the right, and the minivan simultaneously pulled over to its right.

Two people in the minivan declined medical treatment.

A state law requires an investigation into any death that occurs during a law enforcement officer is engaged in official duties, or when a person dies in police custody.

The investigation is ongoing, and no additional information is being released, the statement said.
