Mount Union basketball teams face John Carroll in Ohio Athletic Conference action

The Mount Union men's and women's basketball teams will play John Carroll in Ohio Athletic Conference action on Wednesday. The men's game will be played at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex and the women's game in University Heights. Both games tip off at 7 p.m. Here is a look at each game:

Men

The records: Mount Union is 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and ranked No. 6 nationally by D3hoops.com following an 82-70 loss at Heidelberg on Saturday. John Carroll is 6-0, 1-0 and ranked No. 9 after defeating Muskingum 102-56.

The coaches: Mike Fuline is 199-96 in his 12th season at Mount Union. Pete Moran is 75-49 in his 6th season at John Carroll.

Projected starters: Mount Union: 6-3 Sr. Collen Gurley (16.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists per game); 6-6 Jr. Christian Parker (19.5, 8.8, 0.8); 6-5 Gr. Sr. Braedon Poole (6.8, 4.7, 0.5); 6-3 Gr. Sr. Darrell Newsom (9.8, 2.2, 0.8) and 6-0 Sr. Chris Painter Jr. (5.0, 2.0, 2.2).

John Carroll: 5-10 Soph. Luke Chicone (12.8 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 5.0 apg); 6-6 Soph. Luke Frazier (10.3, 2.2, 1.7); 6-7 Soph. Will Yontek (11.0, 6.2, 0.3); 6-1 Soph. Chase Toppin (6.5, 2.0, 2.0); 6-3 Jr. Connor O’Toole (2.5, 2.3, 0.3).

Notes: John Carroll could be dubbed Transfer U. after several highly publicized newcomers joined the program in the offseason. Chicone, the leading scorer, was at Youngstown State; Frazier was at Dayton and Jerry Higgins III came from The Citadel. Higgins is averaging 7.2 ppg in 17 minutes per game off the bench. … Mount Union looks to rebound from a not-unexpected loss at Heidelberg on Saturday; the Student Princes have been a matchup nightmare for the the Purple Raiders, who suffered 40% shooting and 17 turnovers. … The Purple Raiders lead the all-time series against John Carroll 51-47 and have won the last seven meetings.

Women

The records: Mount Union is 4-3 (1-0 in the OAC) after defeating Heidelberg 80-46 on Saturday. John Carroll defeated Muskingum 62-59 to improve to 4-1, 1-0.

The coaches: Suzy Venet is 279-175 in her 18th season at Mount Union, and 290-191 overall. Beth Andrews is 40-8 in her 3rd season at John Carroll.

John Carroll: 5-10 Sr. Kaelyn Underwood 15-2. Ppg, 5.2 rpg, 0.6 apg); 5-9 Fr. Ava Ryncarz (9.0, 3.6, 1.0); 5-7 Soph. Maddie Pietrowski (8.4, 5.4, 2.8); 5-6 Fr. Carmen Hueker (2.0, 3.8, 0.8); 5-4 Sr. Jaylen Hoffman (8.2, 3.8, 3.6).

Notes: Hensley didn’t play against Heidelberg, but Gretchen Koken (5-8 Sr.) started in her place and scored a game-high 16 points with 10 rebounds in 22 minutes. Four other players scored in double figures, led by Cannon with 13 on 6-of-11 shooting … John Carroll was 23-5 last season, losing to Baldwin Wallace in the OAC tournament final and going 1-1 in the NCAA tournament. … Underwood was 8-for-9 from the floor and scored 17 points against Muskingum. … Bella Carcioppolo (5-7 Fr.) and Halle Landies (5-9 Jr.) will see significant minutes off the bench. … Mount Union leads the all-time series 44-39, but John Carroll has won the last eight meetings.
