Mount Union basketball teams host Heidelberg in Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader

The Mount Union basketball teams play Heidelberg on Saturday. The men’s game will be tip off at 2 p.m. and the women’s game will follow at Timken Gymnasium. Here is a preview of both games:

MOUNT UNION MEN

The records: Mount Union is 15-1 overall and 8-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and ranked No. 3 nationally by D3hoops.com following an 81-55 victory over Muskingum on Wednesday. Heidelberg (12-4, 7-2) was upset by Ohio Northern, 65-64.

The coaches: Mike Fuline is 209-96 in his 12th season at Mount Union. Andy Bucheit is 113-123 in 10 seasons at Heidelberg.

Projected starters: Mount Union: 6-3 Sr. Collen Gurley (13.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists per game); 6-6 Jr. Christian Parker (17.8, 7.6, 1.3); 6-5 Gr. Braedon Poole (8.0, 5.0, 0.7); 6-3 Gr. Sr. Darrell Newsom (10.5, 2.4, 0.8) and 6-0 Sr. Chris Painter Jr. (6.5, 2.1, 2.3).

Heidelberg: 6-4 Gr. Seth Hohman (10.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.1 apg); 5-11 Gr. Emmanuel Perdue (13.0, 3.8, 2.1); 6-10 Jr. Eric Panning (7.4, 7.7, 0.3); 6-2 Jr. Zane Leitwein (8.1, 4.0, 1.2), and 6-2 Soph. Isaiah Young (10.9, 2.9, 3.0).

Notes: Heidelberg handed Mount Union its only loss, 82-70, on Dec. 3 in Tiffin. The Purple Raiders have won 10 consecutive games since then. In that game, Mount Union shot .415 from the floor (27-of-65) and 4-of-24 on 3-pointers (.167). … Christian Parker led all scorers with 24 points, but his teammates were just 17-of-46 (.369) shooting. … Heidelberg was led by Seth Hohman with 15 points and Tre Watkins with 14. The Student Princes’ bench outscored the Raiders 33-18. (Watkins hasn’t played since Dec. 30). … Fuline is 20-7 all-time against Heidelberg, but the Student Princes have won two of the last three times they played at Timken Gymnasium. … Poole played in his 111th career game for Mount Union on Wednesday, establishing a school record.

MOUNT UNION WOMEN

The records: Mount Union is 5-11, 2-7 in the OAC after losing to Muskingum 66-58 on Wednesday. Heidelberg (2-14, 0-9) lost to Ohio Northern 67-31.

The coaches: Suzy Venet is 280-183 in her 18th season at Mount Union, and 291-199 overall. Rachel Ferri is 6-48 in her third season at Heidelberg.

Projected starters: Mount Union: 5-3 Soph. Dae Dae Nash (7.4 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, 2.0 assists per game); 5-8 Sr. Gretchen Koken (10.5, 7.0, 1.1); 5-10 Fr. Audrey Livesay (4.1, 2.3, 0.5); 5-6 Soph. Ali Hudik (8.9, 2.6, 1.8), and 5-7 Sr. Emma Cannon (10.0, 4.3, 1.1).

Heidelberg: 5-8 Soph. Hallie Rogers (11.8 ppg, 2.6, rpg, 1.2 apg); 5-4 Soph. Elisha Carter (9.0, 2.4, 1.6); 6-0 Fr. Cheyanne Bean (4.0, 5.2, 0.9); 5-6 Soph. Taylor Ratliff (1.9, 2.5, 0.6), and 5-10 Soph. Ashley Ballard (1.8, 5.2, 1.4).

Notes: Mount Union had its highest-scoring OAC game of the season on Dec. 3 in an 80-46 win over the Student Princes. … Koken had a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) and four other Raiders scored in double figures. … Mount Union was 28-for-62 from the floor (.452), its second-best shooting game of the season.
