Mount Union kicks off lecture series

ALLIANCE − University of Mount Union kicked off its 2022-23 Lecture Series on Thursday, and this week shared the schedule for other big events.

Thursday's talk, from Michael Crawford of Hall of Fame Resort and Entertainment Company, was the Heffern Lecture, which kicked off the series.

All lectures are free and open to the public. Tickets are required. More information is available at mountunion.edu/lecture-series.

Next up on the Lecture Series schedule is the Wolf Lecture, by writer and activist E. Ethelbert Miller at 7 p.m. Oct. 14. Miller is the author of two memoirs and several books of poetry. He served as the editor of Poet Lore, the oldest poetry magazine published in the United States, and is a two-time Fulbright senior specialist program fellow to Israel. Miller hosts the weekly WPFW morning radio show “On the Margin with E. Ethelbert Miller” and hosts and produces “The Scholars” on UDC-TV. The Wolf Lecture will be in Brush Performance Hall, Giese Center for the Performing Arts.

Actor John Andrew Morrison will present the Eckler Lecture on Oct. 24. Morrison won a Lucille Lortel and an OBIE Award for his work in the Pulitzer Prize winning musical “A Strange Loop.” He is a member of Musical Theater Factory in New York and has collaborated on the development of new musicals through this. Morrison will present “Connecting the Dots Backwards: Reflections on Inner Guidance, Mentors, Failures and Triumphs in Building an Authentic Acting Career.” Morrison's talk will be 7 p.m. in Brush Performance Hall, Giese Center for the Performing Arts.

The Slater Lecture on Feb. 28 will feature Paul Iversen, associate professor and chair of classics at Case Western Reserve University. Iversen has worked with one of the world’s most foremost Greek epigraphers who invited him to work on the Packard Humanities Greek Epigraphy Project – a project to create a searchable database of all ancient Greek inscriptions. He will present “The Antikythera Mechanism and Greek Hellenistic Astronomy and Engineering.” The Slater Lecture will be 7 p.m. in Brush Performance Hall, Giese Center for the Performing Arts.

Mount Union’s Dr. Melissa Askren Edgehouse, professor of education, will present the Faculty Lecture on March 14. Askren Edgehouse co-leads the Accreditation Coordinators' Group in Ohio and is president-elect of the Ohio Association of Private Colleges for Teacher Education. Askren Edgehouse received Mount Union's 2022 Distinguished Service Award and has been a member of the college's faculty since 2009. She will present “COVID and EdTech: How a Pandemic Forever Changed the Way We Teach” at 7 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall, Cope Music Hall.

The 2023 Schooler Lecture will feature a moderated discussion with mental health advocates Ginger Zee and Dan Harris. Zee is chief meteorologist at ABC News and managing editor of ABC’s Climate Unit. Harris is author of New York Times best-seller “10% Happier,” a book about a fidgety, skeptical news anchor who stumbles upon meditation. Both have been advocates for those who battle mental health issues and have worked to help lessen stigmas. The Schooler Lecture will be 8 p.m. April 27 in Timken Gymnasium at McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
