Mount Union men's basketball wins M Club Tournament over Maryville 99-75

Collen Gurley scored 20 points and Mount Union led from the start to defeat Maryville (Tenn.) 99-75 on Saturday to win the M Club Tournament championship at the M.A.A.C.

Gurley, who scored 27 points in Mount Union's 84-74 win over Whitworth (Wash.) on Friday, was named the tournament MVP.

Senior Darrell Newsom added 14 points for the Purple Raiders on Saturday and was named to the all-tournament team.

Jeffrey Mansfield finished with 12 points and six rebounds off the bench for Mount Union, while Braedon Poole had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Charlie Cochran led Maryville (2-1) with 17 points.

Roanoke (Va.) defeated Whitworth 89-86 in the consolation game.

Women's basketball

Gretchen Koken came off the bench to score 23 points pull down 13 rebounds and dish out three assists, all team highs, as Mount Union defeated Manchester (Ind.) 77-69 in the opening round of the Westminster Tournament in New Wilmington, Pa.

Bailey Shutsa added 15 points for the Purple Raiders (2-0) on a perfect shooting performance. Shutsa was 5-for-5 from the field, including a 3-pointer, and 4-of-4 at the foul line. Emma Cannon chipped in 14 points.

Aly Graber and Bridget Nash led Manchester (0-1) with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Mount Union was scheduled to play the host Titans Sunday.

Cross country

Jeff Joseph (West Branch) automatically qualified for the NCAA national cross country championship by placing ninth overall at the Great Lakes regional in Holland, Mich.

Joseph finished in 24 minutes, 34.6 seconds. The Purple Raiders finished third as a team and could qualify as an at-large selection, to be determined Sunday.

Vincent Giumenti (11th, 24:34.7), Forrest Long (21st, 24:49.8) and Hunter Probert (27th, 24:57.9), along with Joseph, earned All-Region status.

The Mount Union women's team finished in fourth place, led by Brit McCauley who was 11th in 21:45.6. Erin Smith (23rd, 22:09.4) and Megan Wertz (24th, 22:10.6) along with McCauley earned All-Region honors.
