Mount Union sends graduates off with cheers
More than 400 undergraduate and graduate students received diplomas Saturday at University of Mount Union’s commencement ceremony in Peterson Field House. The school’s 176th service was conducted in person and marked university President Tom Botzman’s final commencement before he retires. He addressed family members and those who gave support to Mount Union’s Class of 2022. “We warmly welcome the mothers, fathers, husbands and wives, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters, grandparents, aunts and uncles and friends of our 2022 graduates who are here in person today to celebrate this memorable occasion with them and others who are joining us via livestream,” Botzman said. “If any group deserves an ovation from the graduates and from the university, it is you. Please accept our thanks for all you have done to support and encourage today’s graduates.” As is typical of modern graduation ceremonies, this year’s Mount Union class members offered up creativity in the form of messages on their mortar boards, also known as the caps graduates wear to enable them to turn their tassel once they receive their diploma. Many honored club, sorority and fraternity membership, while others showed off their major and future career plans. Still others gave thanks to the parents and loved ones who helped them along their path. Botzman told the students that Mount Union will always welcome them back. “Please return to campus often, share your life stories with us, renew relationships and form new ones and contribute your efforts and ideas to ensuring a bright future for this University.”
