Update, October 30, 2020: Mountain Dew polled fans earlier this month about what flavor hot sauce they should make and habanero was the overwhelming winner. The hot sauce announcement was made with little information about the release, but now official photos and information about the new Mountain Dew hot sauce is finally out.

The limited edition product is being made through a collaborative effort with Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid and hot sauce company iBurn. Along with the habanero flavor chosen by fans, the iconic citrus flavor of Mountain Dew will be apparent in the sauce as well.

Only 500 bottles of the hot sauce will be produced, so those that want to try it out for themselves have to keep their eye on Mountain Dew's social channels in the coming days, a spokesperson told Delish. You might want to turn post notifications on so you can be one of the first to see what Mountain Dew is posting. May the odds be ever in your favor!

Update, October 2, 2020: Well, the results are in folks, and it looks like the Mountain Dew hot sauce is really, truly coming! After about 3,800 fans voted on a Twitter poll, the winning flavor for the upcoming condiment is habanero pepper.

Fans had to choose between Peri-Peri, Fatalii, Habanero, and Datil for the hot sauce and about 37.4 percent on voters went with Habanero. Fatalii was the hottest option on the list and Habanero was the second hottest, ranking in at 200,000 Scoville heat units. That means the sauce will definitely bring on the spice along with some sort of Mountain Dew citrus-inspired flavor too.

There's still no exact date to look forward to for the release, but Mountain Dew did post an image announcing that habanero won the poll: "#DEWNation: you made your choice. Habanero it is. Now it’s time for us to get to work with @JoelEmbiid and @iBurn on the first ever DEW hot sauce."

Original Post, September 30, 2020: Even if you're not a big soda fan yourself, you can appreciate the way popular bubbly beverages reinvent themselves in new flavors, packaging, and products. Whether it's using the familiar scent and color profile for a makeup palette or mixing the drink into a boozy cocktail, there are so many ways to use soda, and for those who like to add a little spice to their life, Mountain Dew is working on a hot sauce.

Mountain Dew is teaming up with iBurn, a hot sauce shop, and Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers to release a limited-edition sauce inspired by the flavors of the popular soda. Joel is a known hot sauce fan and once appeared on the YouTube series Hot Ones where he finished every single hot wing with sauces that ranked up to 2,000,000 on the Scoville scale.

There's no news yet about where the Mountain Dew sauce will land on that scale, but the brand is taking fan opinions into consideration. Mountain Dew tweeted out a message about the upcoming project and asked people to vote on the flavor. The options included Peri-Peri, Fatalii, Habanero, and Datil. Fatalii is the hottest option on the list, but at the time of publication, habanero was most popular in terms of votes.

It's unclear how the lemon-citrus flavor profile will be worked into the hot sauce, but I'd expect the finished sauce to be spicy with a tangy hint of citrus...or maybe the sauce altogether will be green just like the beloved soda. We'll have to wait and see exactly what the concoction turns out to be, but until then I'll be perfecting my chicken wing recipe so I can do my own Hot Ones challenge at home when the Mountain Dew sauce is released. Then I'll wash down the spice with a freshly cracked can of Mountain Dew...obviously.
