Mountains around Las Vegas could get up to 3′ of snow as second atmospheric river moves into valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A powerful storm that is causing flooding and mudslides in Southern California is dropping rain in the Las Vegas valley and could continue to do so for a few days.

According to a social post on X, the National Weather Service in Las Vegas said to expect “off-and-on rain expected through Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will be partly cloudy with a 20-30% chance for isolated showers.”

However by Super Bowl Sunday, the weather is forecast to be sunny but cool.

Harry Reid International Airport is experiencing some flight delays. As of 1:20 p.m., there were 423 delays, most of them impacting Southwest Airlines.

In the meantime, there’s a winter storm warning is in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday for the Spring and Sheep Mountains. Accumulations of up to 3′ of snow are expected above 6,000 feet along with winds gusting up to 55 mph. Nevada State Police are alerting anyone traveling to Mt. Charleston to be aware of possible dangerous road conditions. Chains or snow tires are required for SR156 (Lee Canyon Road) and SR158 (Deer Creek Road).

A social media post from Mt. Charleston stated:

“This storm is not letting up, the roads are dicey even for cars with proper equipment, and the forecast shows we’re in for another day of this so the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway and Kyle picnic areas will remain closed Monday.”

The most rain has fallen in the northwest part of the Las Vegas valley and measures from a 1/4″ to 1/3″ inch. Showers are expected to continue into Tuesday. The rain could take a break Monday during the day but is forecast to return Monday night and into Tuesday with heavy showers and possible thunderstorms.

A flood watch is in effect in Pahrump and Sandy Valley, west of Las Vegas.
