Mountainside Mayor Paul Mirabelli headed to reelection

MOUNTAINSIDE – A former borough police officer who was named in a workplace harassment lawsuit that was sexual in nature lost in his bid to win the mayor's seat.

Unofficial results show Thomas Murphy, a Republican who ran as an independent, had 428 votes while incumbent Republican Mayor Paul Mirabelli had 1,434 votes.

Mirabelli, an attorney and borough resident since 1990, has served as mayor for 13 years. He previously served as a councilman for 13 years, including three years as council president.

Murphy had served as a borough police officer for 25 years before being suspended without pay following the allegations in the lawsuit.
