Mourning Nelson Mandela: Our 10 Favorite Photos From Around the World

The world mourned after antiapartheid activist and South African leader Nelson Mandela died Thursday at age 95. His funeral is scheduled for Dec. 15, but there has been a global outpouring of grief and emotion.

Here are some of the images that touched our hearts.

1. In Cape Town, where Mandela made his first speech following release from prison, this child was one of hundreds who gathered to lay wreaths at the Town Hall. 2. Considering how hard he fought to end apartheid—which means "apartness"—this interracial hug outside Mandela's home in Johannesburg warmed our broken hearts.  3. Schoolgirls in India held a prayer ceremony in their classroom for a man who, like Mahatma Gandhi, fought repressive colonial powers. 4. In Paris, Mandela's face beamed down from the Quai d'Orsay in memoriam. 5. In London, this family lit candles outside the South African High Commission, where many left tributes.  6.  Even New Yorkers paused when the New York Stock Exchange observed a moment of silence before Friday's opening bell. 7.  In Cuba, the flag flew at half mast in Revolution Square, to honor Africa's leading revolutionary. 8.  These Pakistani children held earthen lamps in tribute, in Karachi. 9. In Toronto, a ceremony at a school named for Mandela included songs and tributes. 10. And in Washington, DC, this couple gathered outside the South African embassy to express their condolences. 11. Thanks for inspiring the world, Madiba.  We'll never forget your struggle, and how we rejoiced for your freedom.
