Unlike other kitchen-centric movements that go viral online, butter boards aren't chef-specific. In fact, you can be a complete novice in the cooking department and still master the art of a butter board.
Allow us to explain. First, you just take a cutting board—preferably a wooden one—and smear a thick layer of butter across its surface, topping it with spices, herbs, seeds, or anything you'd like to dip a cracker or bread into.
Some opt for cream cheese (instead of butter) finished with smoked lox, capers, and everything bagel seasoning, while others go for full-fat butter covered in red onion, sea salt, lemon zest, and edible flowers. You see, the beauty of butter boards is the lack of strict recipes giving anyone free rein to create their own bespoke board.
We’re personally all about the bagel-inspired options but would try just about anything. It’s like a much less complicated take on difficult-to-assemble charcuterie boards. In other words, butter boards are the perfect appetizer or passed hors d’oeuvre for your next gathering. They’d also make for a delicious (albeit unhealthy) snack for those times when you need something tasty in your belly that doesn't require much money or effort.
The trend all started with content and recipe creator Justine Doiron, who whipped up her first butter board for her nearly two million TikTok followers last month. Today, “#butterboard” has more than 83 million views on TikTok.
