Move over, Cronut. The Charlotte area is getting North Carolina’s first Mochinut.

You’ve heard about the Cronut, but what about the Mochinut?

If you’ve never tried a Mochinut, you’ll soon have the chance. The LA-based doughnut shop, which just opened its first location in 2021 and now has over 50 locations around the world, is opening its first North Carolina location in Pineville this year in May or June.

What is a Mochinut?

A Mochinut is a mochi doughnut made with rice flour that originated in Hawaii and unites Japanese rice cakes (mochi) with American-style doughnuts. The rice flour gives the dough a stretchy, chewy texture that distinguishes it from a traditional yeast or cake doughnut and its bubbly shape gives the sweet treat a whimsical feel.

What to expect

A fast-casual, colorful confectionery with a mix of sweet and savory treats including Mochinuts, boba teas and hot dogs wrapped in a Korean rice flour casing.

Mochinut flavors change regularly, varying based on location, and are announced on Mochinut’s Instagram page and website.

Some of the flavors listed on Mochinut’s website include traditional varieties you’d expect from a doughnut shop like Red Velvet and Cookies and Cream, as well as more outside-of-the-donut-box options, including Yuzu, Ube, Banana Milk and Black Sesame.
