Move over teacher. AI can help teach kids maths

Math teachers are being taken out of the equation at this school in England.

A new artificial intelligence platform is helping the children learn the subject and can even correct errors before a calculation is finished.

What its creator hopes is a better way to finish that tricky sum.

The system, called Blutick, is the brainchild of a former mathematics teacher, Rob Percival.

He developed it with a school in Cambridge to help build confidence in the subject.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) BLUTICK FOUNDER, ROB PERCIVAL, SAYING:

"With Blutick I'm trying to recreate that moment of when a student's working on a problem and they're struggling with it and a teacher comes along and tells them just the right thing. Give them just the right bit of encouragement or feedback. And they get that 'Aha!' moment. And they realise that I can do this and I can do maths."

With teachers hosting around 30 students per classroom - they're pressed for time.

This AI teacher gives instant intelligent feedback and lets the physical teacher know what students are finding tough.

The system covers the full UK math curriculum for children aged 11 to 16.

Percival says it's intended to free them up from routine teaching and marking tasks - instead giving them more time to spend on tailored, individual tuition.
