New movie, 'Shirley,' filming in Cincinnati and starring Regina King

Cincinnati-born actor and producer Regina King is returning to the Queen City to begin filming an upcoming movie this month.

Production will begin this week for "Shirley," the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Congresswoman from New York. King is a producer and will star as Chisholm in the film, according to a release from Film Cincinnati.

The film is written and directed by John Ridley, who will also produce along with Royal Ties Productions and Participant.

"Shirley" will follow Chisholm's 1972 presidential campaign, and is based on her life story rights through an agreement with her estate. According to Film Cincinnati, the movie will provide an "intimate, behind-the-scenes portrait of the ground-breaking political leader during a seminal period in modern American history."

King received her first Academy Award in 2019 for Best Supporting Actress for “If Beale Street Could Talk." She's also received Emmy Awards for her roles in or “American Crime,” “Seven Seconds” and “Watchmen.”

King made her directorial debut with the film, "One Night in Miami" released in 2020.

King was born in Cincinnati but grew up in Los Angeles. She sent her first Emmy Award to her hometown of Cincinnati where her mother and grandmother could watch over it.

Cincinnati filming locations for "Shirley" have not yet been announced.

Earlier in November, local casting director D. Lynn Meyers Casting was looking for extras in King's film, according to a Facebook post.
