Movies, TV shows on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and more to watch in September

A new month means a whole new load of fresh shows and movies that get added to our favourite streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and more.

While the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes have delayed the release of several TV shows and movies, with the expectation that more shifts and cancellations will continue, there's still new content constantly being added to streaming sites.

This month, several fan-favourite TV shows return, like Virgin River and Sex Education on Netflix. While new shows like Gen V on Amazon's Prime Video will have its premiere.

For movies, the famed The Little Mermaid remake will be available to stream on Disney+, along with a new film starring Kaitlyn Dever, the psychological thriller No One Will Save You.

New and noteworthy TV shows, movies to stream in Canada in September:

Netflix

Virgin River

The Canada-filmed romantic drama Virgin River is back for Season 5, with the first part of the season premiering on Netflix Sept. 7 with 10 episodes.

As we see in the trailer for the new season, a wildfire will be a significant threat to the town throughout the season.

In all its complicated glory, Season 4 of Virgin River left us with a lot of questions fans are hoping to find answers to in the upcoming season. Primarily, who is the real father of Charmaine's (Lauren Hammersley) twins?

Fans were also left wondering how Denny's (Kai Bradbury) storyline will continue, and impact others, after Doc (Tim Matheson) found out about Denny's Huntington’s disease.

Additionally, Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) is pregnant and engaged to Jack (Martin Henderson), and we'll see what kind of complications that comes with in Season 5.

Sex Education

The fourth and final season of Sex Education, the joyfully hysterical comedy centred around horny teenagers, will be released on Netflix Sept. 21.

Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) will start the season at Cavendish Sixth Form College, which has a very different culture than Moordale. There's yoga in the garden and popular students are actually kind, but Otis has some competition now that he's not the only sex therapist on campus.

Gillian Anderson is of course returning to the show as the sex therapist mom to Otis, but new cast members include Canadian Dan Levy, who plays author Thomas Molloy teaching Maeve (Emma Mackey) at Wallace University.

Disney+

The Little Mermaid

The famed live action remake of The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, will be available to watch at home on Disney+ on Sept. 6.

The reimagined version of the story also features Canadian Jacob Tremblay, Javier Bardem, Awkwafina, Daveed Diggs and Melissa McCarthy.

No One Will Save You

The sci-fi, psychological thriller No One Will Save You, starring Kaitlyn Dever, lands on Disney+ Sept. 22.

Brynn Adams (Dever) is lonely, feeling alienated by her community, until one night she hears "strange noises" from "unearthly intruders." Brynn ends up facing off with these beings, which also forces her to deal with her past.

Prime Video

The Continental: From the World of John Wick

The Amazon Original Series The Continental: From the World of John Wick (premiering Sept. 22) takes us into the origin of the "hotel-for-assassins," featured in the John Wick franchise. A young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) leads us through the journey in 1970s New York City, "to face a past he thought he’d left behind."

In a particularly controversial move, Mel Gibson also stars in the series as the hotel manager. When Gibson's casting was initially announced, John Wick fans were very quick to criticize the decision after the actor's history of making anti-Semitic, homophobic and racist remarks.

Gen V

Gen V is a spinoff series of the Prime Video hit The Boys, set between Season 3 and Season 4 of the original show.

Premiering Sept. 29, we head to superhero college, Godolkin University, and a group of young superheroes discover that something "sinister" is going on at the school.

Paramount+

Office Race

With an impressive cast of comedy icons including Joel McHale, Beck Bennett, Kelsey Grammer, Alyson Hannigan and J.B. Smoove, Office Race comes to Paramount+ on Sept. 4.

The setup for the series is office worker Pat (Beck Bennett), in an attempt to one-up his "micromanaging, exercise-obsessed boss," decides to run a marathon.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Season 4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, from Emmy-winner Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty), premieres on Paramount+ Sept. 7.

In the series, there's a force "threatening galactic peace" and the U.S.S. Cerritos crew may be the only ones to address this threat.

Crave

Shoresy

Season 2 of the Canadian hockey hit Shoresy is back for Season 2, premiering Sept. 29 on Crave, with a six-episode season that begins with the the Bulldogs having their eyes on a league record.

Created by and starring Jared Keeso, Shoresy was the most-watched Canadian series debut in Crave history when it launched.

I Have Nothing

The Crave original comedy docuseries I Have Nothing, created by Carolyn Taylor, premieres Sept. 23 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

The Baroness Von Sketch Show star sets off on a mission to choreograph "the perfect, full-length pairs figure skating routine" to Whitney Houston's hit song "I Have Nothing."

Hayu

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City

Betrayal, rivalry and drama are on full display in the trailer for the Season 4 of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, premiering Sept. 5 and available to stream on Hayu in Canada.

While one of the show's stars from previous seasons, Jen Shah, is serving a five-year prison sentence, the iconic Mary Cosby has returned. Cosby is the woman who previously gave us the infamous "she smelled like hospital" line.

There's also an entirely new cast member, Angie Katsanevas, coming on board as a housewife. She's the owner of a hair salon with multiple locations in Utah.

Southern Charm

It's the end of an era with Kathryn Dennis leaving the Bravo hit Southern Charm, and we'll finally be able to determine if the show can really exist without her.

Season 9 of Southern Charm, premiering Sept. 14, has Taylor Ann Green seemingly stirring the pot, with the trailer teasing that she's hooked up with multiple cast members.

Craig Conover and Paige DeSorbo may be having some relationship troubles, while we still love to see Madison LeCroy fire back on anyone who has something negative to say about her.

Fubo

Family Feud Canada

Family Feud is absolutely one of the most beloved game shows and on Sept. 11 Canadians can start enjoying Season 5 of Family Feud Canada on Fubo.

Based on a True Story

Starring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina, Based on a True Story takes place when a realtor, an ex-tennis star and a plumber capitalize on society's obsession with murder with a true crime podcast.
