Suspect dead after apartment standoff in Frayser

A suspect who barricaded himself in a Frayser apartment has died after an hours-long standoff Wednesday with Memphis police officers.

Earlier Wednesday, a Memphis police officer was shot during an attempt to pick up a suspect with a warrant at the apartment. The officer is in non-critical condition.

The shooting, Memphis Police Department said, occurred in the 2800 block of Vayu Drive about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The shooter barricaded himself inside the apartment and officers set up a perimeter, according to Sgt. Louis Brownlee, an MPD public information officer. He added that a crisis negotiation team assisted in negotiating the suspect's surrender.

"At 5:20 pm, after multiple failed attempts to make contact with the suspect, officers deployed smoke and a robot into the residence and located the suspect suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted" gun-shot wound, Brownlee said.
