MPD officers shot during standoff receive standing ovation upon leaving hospital

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) – The officers who were shot in an hours-long barricade situation in SE Wednesday were released from Washington Hospital Center Thursday morning.

They received a standing ovation from fellow DC Police officers who lined the entrance to the hospital’s emergency room.

Three officers were shot Wednesday morning while attempting to serve an arrest warrant to 46-year-old Julius James who was wanted on animal cruelty charges.

Police say after James shot the officers, he barricaded himself inside his home in the 5000 block of Hanna Place SE for over 12 hours.

One officer was shot twice in his bulletproof vest, once in the chest and once in the lower back.

The other two were shot in the lower leg, according to DC Police Union President Greg Pemberton.

A fourth officer was treated for non-gun-related injuries.

DC Police Chief Pamela Smith told DC News Now that the officers’ spirits were high upon leaving the hospital, undeterred by their injuries.

“The spirits were pretty high. One of them shouted out to me, “Don’t worry Chief, we’ll be right back.” So, I’m very excited to know that they’re excited to do this work and as you know, this is a hard job,” said Chief Smith.

According to the Humane Rescue Alliance, 31 dogs, including 11 puppies were removed from James’ house.

In addition to animal cruelty charges, Chief Smith says James is likely facing additional charges for assaulting a police officer.
