MPD: Woman chases man around yard with hatchet

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman is facing assault and drug charges after chasing a man around a yard with a hatchet.

Around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, the victim says they saw the suspect, 37-year-old Christy Dunagan, with a box of custom knives that he immediately recognized belonged to someone else.

The victim took the knives and returned them to a family member of the person to whom they belonged. He told police that Dunagan became upset at him for interfering with her taking the knives to sell.

Memphis Police are searching for a suspect who stole an officer’s car and crashed it near Mud Island.

After a verbal altercation, the victim says Dunagan started chasing him around the yard with a hatchet. The victim claimed that he feared for his life.

When officers arrived, they found Dunagan walking on Reenie Avenue with a hatchet hanging by a clip from her belt loop.

As officers detained her, she confessed that she was the one chasing the victim around the yard and swinging the hatchet at him.

After she was placed in custody, officers checked the purse and wallet she was carrying and located several clear crystalline particles in her wallet. Police had the granules taken to 201 Poplar Avenue and they tested positive for methamphetamine with a 0.01tgw.

Dunagan was read her rights and when speaking with an investigator, she told them she took the knives, but would not say whether or not she had permission to do so. When the investigator asked her about the methamphetamine, she responded, “What methamphetamine?”

Dunagan has been charged with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

She is being held on $20,000 bond.
